How to Read Nutrition Labels Like a Boss: 5 Hidden Ingredients to Look Out For

Posted on June 4, 2025

You are in the grocery aisle, turned over a “healthy” snack bar, and trying to read the tiny print on the back. Calories? Check. Fats? Got it. But then there are hidden sugars under names you’ve never even heard of. That’s where many of us go wrong. Nutrition labels are designed to inform, yet they often confuse the average consumer with complex names and misleading health claims.

Let’s break it down and learn how to spot the sneaky stuff so you can shop smarter and eat cleaner.

1. Start with the Serving Size Then Do the Math

Most people glance at the calorie count and move on. But here’s the trick: the numbers are per serving, not the whole pack. That small bag of chips? It might say 150 calories, but with three servings in the bag, you’re actually downing 450.

The same logic applies to sugar. A serving may only have 8g of sugar, but if you consume double, you’re suddenly pushing into hidden sugars territory without even knowing it.

2. The Sugar Sleight of Hand: Multiple Names, Same Problem

The most deceptive tactic on nutrition labels is disguising hidden sugars. Rather than simply mentioning sugar,’ brands often include various names for it in the ingredient list. Look out for:

  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Evaporated cane juice
  • Maltodextrin
  • Rice syrup
  • Dextrose or fructose

These are not simply sweeteners, they’re food products that spike blood sugar and drain energy in you as unintentional consequences of consuming them often. Food has the marketing message of “low sugar” plastered on the front of some packaging, but when you add everything up, all of the synonyms for sugar, it’s about to tell you a different story and leave you with riddled blood sugar.

3. Fat Free Doesn’t Always Mean Healthy

This sounds healthy: “fat free yogurt” or “zero fat dressing.” But oftentimes, when manufacturers remove the fat, they either have to artificially enhance the product with other additives or, to nobody’s surprise, add hidden sugars to make the flavor work. In fact, that “healthier option” yogurt might actually contain more sugar than a single scoop of ice cream. Therefore, it’s important to look beyond fat content and check the sugar levels too. Additionally, reading the ingredient list carefully can help you avoid these sneaky additions.

Don’t be fooled by these front labels. Always read past the marketing terms, and look at the ingredient lists and nutrition panel not only to see what marketing you missed, but to uncover what they are trying to not market to you!

4. Beware of these 5 Worst Offenders

Here are five “health” food offenders:

  • We discussed Hidden Sugars above, but let’s reiterate them!
  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): may be hidden as “yeast extract” or “natural flavors.”
  • Trans Fats: look for “partially hydrogenated oils” even if the label says “0g trans fat.”
  • Sodium Nitrate: found in processed meats; there are many health risks associated.
  • Artificial Sweeteners: sucralose or aspartame (usually found in a “sugar free” product), can confuse the insulin response within the body.

Excessive consumption of these certain unhealthy additives can cause bloating, fatigue, and more serious health risks.

Your Food, Your Power

By knowing what’s in your food, you gain the power to make health or smarter choices. Knowing how to identify hidden sugars and other misleading ingredients help you to regain that control from cunning marketing, and even more complicated food labels.

Treat every shopping trip as an opportunity to intentionally fuel your body. The better you are at reading the label, the better you write your health story one ingredient at a time.
